Glee concert in Vegas, baby!
July 12th, 2011 by Jeff

In May, we were thrilled to attend the opening concert of the Glee tour this year in Vegas. The concert was amazing, and we had a fantastic time crooning to many of our favorite Glee songs.

The concert was at Mandalay Bay Resort, but we decided to stay a little more centrally located on the strip at the new City Center properties. Our hotel/casino of choice was the new Cosmopolitan hotel.

Vegas has definitely come a long way from the days of boring, cookie-cutter casino hotels of decades past…as well as leaving behind over-themed properties. Today’s Vegas is all about hip architecture and decor…albeit a little over-the-top. The Cosmopolitan best embodies this new era.

Below are some of the artistic shots that I did during the trip. Enjoy!

JLS Photography – Portfolio Group, Spring 2011, Meeting #8
    July 12th, 2011 by Jeff

Was looking back at the photos that I printed to take to the final meeting of our portfolio group before summer break, and I thought I would share versus have them languish on my computer. They were taken with the Hipstamatic app using the iPhone 4 camera. Enjoy!

    California from the Clouds
    July 11th, 2011 by Jeff

Without the aid of radar, satellite GPS, or those nifty seatback maps, it can be difficult to calculate where in the sky you actually are while flying over the country towards SFO. Fortunately, a few big landmarks give away your location in California. Looking out the window, I spied what from a distance had to be Lake Tahoe.

Our flight plan was basically following I-80 into California flying directly over Immigrant pass…that treacherous entry into California for early travelers. Thankfully in the modern age, you can breeze right over it in minutes. The next big surprise in our route was given away by another landmark…the Sacramento river delta and northern San Francisco Bay. Most flights flying west towards SFO approaching from the south. On this trip, we were approaching from the north. With my landmark in place, I was able to easily recognize the Napa Valley…then the Sonoma Valley…then the coastal range in Marin County…and then finally the city and Golden Gate bridge battling the fog from the Ocean.

With a turn over the southern part of SF, we circled around to land smoothly in SFO. With my camera glued to the window during our flight over California, I was able to capture many of the sights described above for your viewing pleasure…enjoy!

    Muskegon for the 4th…
    July 10th, 2011 by John

Jeff and I spent a week in Muskegon leading up to the 4th of July.  Our visit started off with a major snag…a freak summer storm in San Francisco, a cancelled flight, and comedy of United ineptitude.  Long story short: rather than fly to Muskegon, we had to take a red eye to Dulles (yes Dulles), circle back to Chicago, and then DRIVE 3.5 hours to Muskegon.  Fun times, to be sure.

But yes, we did make it…no worse for the wear.  This was an extra-special 4th of July visit for us, because it marked my parents’ first visit to Muskegon to meet Jeff’s family.  A full-on family adventure!

So, I went a bit crazy (as usual) with the photo edits.  So, I’m going to test out the WordPress “gallery” feature and see if this is an efficient way to show lots of photos in a shorter space.  Fingers crossed.

Below, the careful observer will catch scenes from the White River; food pics from U.S. 31 BBQ, G&L, and Hobos; a serene nature walk; family and friends…and pets 🙂  Oh yes, check out the fireworks!!

So, I wanted to end with this whimsical shot of my dad.  This pretty much sums up our collective mood at the end of this special week.  G’night 🙂
